Here at House 42, our drop-in centre for women who are affected by poverty, we have had a birthday!! As we are now 1 year old, we wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your support and to celebrate all that God has done in the last few months.

Over the last year, we have had the privilege of meeting and getting to know lots of special women, many of whom spend a large part of their week with us. They come from a variety of nationalities, socio-economic and religious backgrounds but share a common thread of domestic violence, significant mental health challenges and isolation.

It’s for people such as these that House 42 has become a second home. Visitors come to our door because they have heard that we will help them and many keep coming back because they say that we have become the family that they have lost or left behind. They say that we give them a reason to leave the lonely isolation of their house and the courage to step outside. They say that we are the only people in their life who don’t criticise them.

As a team this is really precious to us and we feel that it is our honour to be a part of the process of loving and caring for these women. We’re so thankful to God for giving us the time to be able to share with them.

A year is always a good milestone to look back and reflect and, as we celebrated our joint birthday at the beginning of December with a lot of food, some silly games and lots of laughter, we couldn’t help but feel touched by this extraordinary community that we have become, this eclectic mix of ages, cultures and faiths. Perhaps we are joined by a love of craft, (or more likely cake!), or perhaps it’s something a little more poignant. Perhaps it’s because this year we’ve grown something together - through celebrations and discouragements - a place where all women are welcome and all women are loved, and a community who are working together to build a more positive future.
