Manage Your Money Week - Report

Manage Your Money Week took place in Bradford at the end of October.

Wellsprings Together Bradford recently helped to organise a conference as part of the Manage Your Money Week. Together with partners from the Bradford District Anti-Poverty Co-ordination Group including Bradford District Credit Union and Royds Community Association a number of events were hosted around Bradford and District.

Liz Firth, Development Worker at Wellsprings Together Bradford said, ’The team organising the event wanted to bring together those working and volunteering in local communities to share their ideas of how we can support people to manage their money well and provide them with information on what help is available’.

During the event we were reminded that many of those claiming benefits are in work, and that many of those who will be claiming Universal Credit will be working in Churches, for public sector bodies, in our communities and schools. We also recognised that lots of us struggle with managing our money well and that being able to manage money is a skill that we'd all be better off learning. Another important message from the event was recent research that demonstrates that every £1 spent on financial inclusion work is worth £9 for the local community.

Events during the week included a roadshow of frontline organisations which visited local shopping centres, work done by the anti-loan shark team and the week concluded with a special visit from The Rt Revd Dr Toby Howarth who visited St Mary's primary school in Keighley who have a LifeSavers school savings clubs with government and Church of England funding, supported the Bradford District Credit Union. The Bishop of Bradford attended the savings club to meet the children who diligently saved their pocket money in the Credit Union.

Full roll-out of the new benefit system, Universal Credit, is due to start in Bradford District in June and be completed by September 2018.
