The Children’s Society, Lichfield Diocese, Mothers’ Union and Home for Good are joining forces to support vulnerable young refugees in Lichfield Diocese.

More children are fleeing their homes to escape violence, persecution or conflict than at any point since the Second World War, many arriving traumatised, destitute and completely alone.

There is a real and urgent need to ensure the most vulnerable children seeking help in our country are given a place of refuge and hope. As the global refugee crisis continues, we know there are over 200 unaccompanied asylum seeking children making their home in Lichfield Diocese, with more expected to arrive as part of various Government schemes. Our readiness to welcome, and be aware of the needs of, these young people has never been greater.

The Hat·tê·ḇāh initiative aims to equip participants to understand and respond to the issues faced by young refugees, through the delivery of free awareness-raising training.

The training will provide an opportunity to reflect on the Christian imperative to support young refugees and provide guidance on how to do this practically. The training is aimed at people who may come across refugees in their work or who might be influencers of others. This will include both church professionals, e.g. clergy, family or youth workers, chaplains and pastoral assistants, and professionals within church communities, e.g. teachers, lawyers and medical professionals. It will also be a great opportunity for those who may not have contact with young refugees but would like to increase their awareness. The content will highlight issues facing young refugees in this country. Whilst the content will focus directly on the experience of young refugees, much of the information will be relevant to vulnerable adults too.

On the day we will cover topics such as:

  • What is a refugee?
  • A young refugee’s journey and the asylum process
  • Rights and entitlements
  • Health and well-being good practice
  • Organisations to contact for advice and support.
