Why the Mustard Seed appeal is so important

Over 8 million people in the UK are struggling in financial distress. Without access to other finance options, many resort to high cost loans to cover basic necessities such as food and fuel. This is having a devastating effect on physical and mental health, families and entire communities.

Work has already started.

Pilot work in two regions has formed the beginnings of a ‘Just Finance Network’ to develop community finance and money advice services, and give people the skills they need to make sound financial decisions. This work builds on the Church Credit Champions Network.

So far, nearly 200 churches have been mobilised, with over 250 trained volunteers to provide budgeting and debt advice and helping to recruit over 2,300 new credit union members. These two pilot projects alone are expected to generate £2.2 million in social value.

Imagine the difference we could make if the network were extended across England!

Growing the mustard seed

Church Urban Fund has been asked by The Archbishop of Canterbury to deliver a national roll out of the Just Finance Network.

The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Mustard Seed Appeal has been set up to raise funds throughout the summer, with all sorts of fun and inspiring fundraising events. Together we can grow the seed planted by the Archbishop into a real movement for positive change.

Have a look at our fundraising ideas to get you started.

So what can you do to help raise funds?

Every church and individual can help in one of three ways:

1) Hold a fundraising event – just let us know that you want to get involved.

2) Hold a church collection and donate the total online.

3) Make a personal donation to the Mustard Seed Appeal.

If you are going to plan an event, please arrange it for any time in summer so that we can receive all money raised by Harvest. And please don’t forget to let us know about your event in advance. Then, while you’re dreaming up your event, we will get back in touch with all the support you need to make it a success.

Booking for this event has now closed.
