A Gift in Your Will
Leave your mark!

According to research produced by the Remember a Charity consortium in April 2006, two in three people want to leave a legacy to charity in their Will.

For many leaving a gift in this way is the greatest opportunity they will ever have to make a significant donation to a cause they really care about.

If you value the work we is doing, and would like to see it grow to benefit future generations, then you can do so by simply naming the Church Urban Fund in your Will.

There are three types of legacy you can leave:
  1. A specified sum of money (otherwise known as a pecuniary legacy)
  2. One or more named items, such as shares, jewellery or property (a specific legacy)
  3. All or a part of what is left over after taking care of everyone else (a residuary legacy)
Where do I start?
Whether you have been planning to write a Will but not got around to it, or you have not even started thinking about it yet, it is easy to leave a gift to the Church Urban Fund:
  1. Start by drawing up a list of all your main assets: when you add up the value of your home and contents, savings and investments and insurance policies: the total can be surprising (and also highlight a potential liability to inheritance tax)
  2. Then think about what you would like to do: after deducting any liabilities, as well as any provision you may want to make for your family, you will have an idea of how much you might be able to leave to charity (with the added benefit that all such gifts will be tax-free)
  3. Seek professional advice: a Will is one of the most important documents you will ever sign, so it is highly advisable to consult a solicitor, who will ensure it does exactly what you want

What if I have already made a Will?

  1. Now is a good time to review it: it is advisable to do this on a regular basis anyway, as recent changes in your family circumstances, for example, may need to be covered specifically (otherwise your Will may no longer do exactly what you thought it would)
  2. A simple codicil to your existing Will may suffice: if so, then in effect you can just add an instruction about your legacy to CUF
