Community Action Norwich

Norwich project location mapPoverty in the East of England is unevenly distributed. Norwich is the second most deprived authority district in the region, with 32% of children affected by income deprivation compared to 19% in Norfolk as a whole. [1]

Established in 1999, Community Action Norwich offers a range of creative activities for children and young people, activities to help overcome loneliness and isolation amongst older residents and an allotment project for local families. The project leaders approached Church Urban Fund for support after identifying the need for an educational resource in the area to improve the numeracy and literacy skills of local residents.

With Church Urban Fund's input, a twice-weekly course has been set up for twenty adults and fifteen children, giving them the opportunity to improve their basic skills. Through education in an informal setting and access to the other recreational programmes on offer, the project hopes to reduce anti-social behaviour in the short term and transform the future prospects of residents in the long term.

With our investment and resources, key activists can begin to create sustainable change. Many more communities need this kind of multi-faceted investment to develop tools to combat poverty now and in years to come.
