All Saints Community Centre, Tuckingmill, Camborne

Camborne project location mapThe Camborne North ward is amongst the bottom 10% of most deprived wards in the UK. With the closure of tin and copper mines in the 1990s and the subsequent decline of manufacturing in the area, it continues to experience high unemployment rates and low wages.

Treve James, the Centre Co-ordinator at All Saint’s Community Centre in Tuckingmill, felt that the community needed a focus, somewhere people could work together to identify their needs and find ways of making things better in their neighbourhood:

'Though it is a multi-purpose centre for the whole community, we are working particularly with those who find themselves marginalised in society. People feel safe in this warm and friendly environment. It is a wonderful facility because it is anonymous; there is an open door policy and we do not judge anyone. This is why the Centre is now the flagship project for community resources in Cornwall.' Treve James, Centre Coordinator.Boy sitting at desk

Over 275 people access the services and activities at the Centre each week, which include a youth club, indoor bowls for the disabled and an luncheon club for elderly people. People living with mental illnesses are supported through art clubs and a ‘caring communities’ club.

Other activities at the Centre include a programme for young offenders promoting integration back into community life and a confidence-building group for people seeking employment. Since opening in 2000, the Centre has truly become a frontrunner in meeting the real needs of local people.

Through our provision of investment and resources, people like Treve can begin to create sustainable change. Many more communities need this kind of multi-faceted investment to develop tools to combat poverty now and in years to come.
