Today in our country:
- 11.4 million people, including 3.4 million children, are living below the poverty line
-
For around one in four children, the school meal is their only meal of the day
-
There are to 380,000 single homeless people in Britain
-
Almost half of 45-64 year olds in the poorest fifth of the population have a limiting longstanding illness or disability, twice the rate for those on average incomes
-
1.8 million pensioner live in poverty with one in five people over 65 spending more than 12 hours on their own every day resulting in isolation, depression and ill-health
People in poverty are more likely to suffer from crime, bad health and poor access to services. The Church Urban Fund works with people across the country that are working for change in their communities, providing opportunities to people experiencing first hand the debilitating effects of poverty.
How does the Church Urban Fund make a difference?
-
Promoting sustainability - placing a strong emphasis on supporting activities in a way that will enable people to manage their own future
-
Helping 'at the grassroots'- supporting local churches that are at the heart of their communities, able to reach those who are hardest to reach and help in a way that other funders may not.
-
Sharing best practice - Church Urban Fund's programme of research and assessment can capture and evaluate evidence of things that work and that have the potential for replication elsewhere
-
Faithfulness in funding - we are able to support initiatives in a unique way that is in tough with local needs and provides solutions that are locally appropriate, generated by local people and delivered by people committed to their local community
-
The 'Mustard Seed effect' - Church Urban Fund is often the 'first funder', helping projects to get off the ground and often encouraging other funders to further invest - for every £1 invested by Church Urban Fund, an average of £8 is added from elsewhere over a project's lifetime
