"I have witnessed firsthand how, working together, the Church and Church Urban Fund have helped to transform areas of Hull by supporting individuals tackling poverty in their communities." Rt. Revd. Richard Frith, Bishop of Hull.

Join us! How to hold a Poverty Sunday…

1. Have you got the Poverty Sunday Leader's Resource booklet?

This A4 booklet includes suggestions for a sermon reflection, details of our inspiring case study, hymns and intercessions and an all age activity. You can request the booklet or alternatively you can download the PDF.

2. Set a date

Poverty Sunday 2011 activities are based around the 26th June this year, but the resources are designed to be used all year round. If you need help deciding, there are suggestions for alternative dates on page 5 of the Leader’s Resource Booklet, chosen in accordance with appropriate lectionary readings.

3. Register your service and order your free resources

Additional resources available to support your Poverty Sunday service include:

  • Case study film (DVD)
  • PowerPoint presentation
  • ‘The Cutting Edge’ spending cuts survey
  • Pew cards
  • Collection boxes
  • Gift aid envelopes
  • Poverty Sunday publicity poster

Register and order your resources and they will be despatched in plenty of time for you to plan and publicise your service.

4. Hold your Poverty Sunday service

Invite the community, publicise the service, plan and choose which of our resources you would like to use and join together on the day to reflect on poverty in England.  Poverty Sunday services often provide financial support to ensure that Church Urban Fund can continue to support inspiring individuals working in our most deprived communities. You could give out pew cards and Gift Aid envelopes to the congregation as they arrive, or alternatively place them on the pews or seats. Have pens available to fill out the Gift Aid form as this enables us to greatly increase the value of donations.

5. Afterwards

Please fill out the Payment form received with your resources order and send funds raised at your Poverty Sunday to Church Urban Fund, FREEPOST RLUR-KYUC-KTBX, Church House, Great Smith Street, LondonSW1P 3AZ. Using this form to send any gifts raised helps to increase the amount of Gift Aid we can claim and helps to reduce administration costs. You can download the payment form if you need to print additional copies.

There are other ways that churches can get involved in supporting us:

  • Order Loose Change collection boxes for your congregation and let your loose change make a big change.
  • Become a voluntary speaker as a part of our growing Speaker Network. If you're a confident public speaker, and have a passion for poverty and social justice, then you could also help us by visiting churches and local groups to raise awareness about poverty.
  • Commit  a portion of your mission giving to help us support Christians working to tackle poverty in England.
