Trustees

Church Urban Fund has nine members on its Board of Trustees.

Chairman: The Venerable Paul Hackwood

Paul Hackwood is a Residentiary Canon at Leicester Cathedral and has been a Trustee of the Church Urban Fund since 2005 taking on the role of Chair on 1st January 2009.

He was previously Archdeacon of Loughborough in the Diocese of Leicester. He has extensive experience of social justice issues from a faith perspective, having worked previously as Social Responsibility Adviser to the Bishop of St Albans and as Vicar of Thornbury in Bradford. During his time in Thornbury he established the Thornbury Centre, a Church-based multicultural community centre and social enterprise, and the Peaceworks initiative, working to bring people of different faiths together to develop mutual understanding. As an Independent Member of West Yorkshire Police Authority he took a lead on Community Relations and Human Resource Management. He is a visiting Lecturer at the St Philip's Centre for Dialogue and Diversity.

He lives with his wife Rowena, their four children, and two Border Collies. He enjoys watching Leicester Tigers and running.


Deputy Chair: Derek Twine CBE

Derek was appointed UK Scouting’s CEO in 1996. He is active in European and global youth and leadership development, and in the UK's voluntary and community sector. He has chaired the Education and Training Committee of the National Youth Agency, and the Training Group of the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services. He has been a member of the Youth Panel of the National Trust, Working Groups of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations and of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, and various other third sector initiatives.

He writes widely, has been invited to present evidence to Parliamentary Enquiries and Committees, has lobbied governments on key issues and often represents youth work and the wider third sector in the media. He is a Non-Executive Director on the Boards of commercial companies (UK and off-shore), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

He is a Trustee and Vice-Chair of the Church Urban Fund, and a member of the Strategic Advisory Board for the British Youth Council. Locally, he is School Governor, an active member of his local church, and engaged with community charities. In 2007, Derek was appointed CBE for “services to young people”.


The Right Reverend David Walker

David Walker is Bishop of Dudley in the Diocese of Worcester, a post he has held since 2000. Prior to this he was heavily involved in a number of regeneration initiatives over 17 years as a clergyman in South Yorkshire.

David has particular experience in social housing, having served on the Board of the National Housing Federation from 1996 to 2002. He is Chair of HACT (Housing Authorities Charitable Trust and CHADD (Churches Housing Association of Dudley and District), a Church-based special needs housing association; a member of the Urban Bishops’ Panel and of CMEAC (Committe for Minority Ethnic Anglican Concerns). In 2009 he was appointed to the Qualities and Diversity Board Advisory Group at the Homes and Communities Agency.

David is married to Sue, and they have 2 children. He plays and watches cricket, enjoys long distance walking, and is a member of the Third Order of the Society of St. Francis.


Patrick Coldstream CBE

Patrick Coldstream is Chairman of the Hymns Ancient and Modern publishing group which includes SCM-Canterbury Press and The Church Times. He has helped found several charities, including two which aimed to create private/public sector partnerships to help into work those at greatest disadvantage in inner cities. He chaired the ecumenical Churches' Enquiry into Unemployment and the Future of Work, which was begun by the late David Sheppard, Bishop of Liverpool.


Michael Eastwood

Mike Eastwood is currently both Diocesan Secretary in the Diocese of Liverpool and Director of Operations in Liverpool Cathedral. He is also a trustee of Merseyside Community Foundation.

He was previously the Director of the Directory of Social Change and has been Chair of the National Association of Councils for Voluntary Action, a member of the Advisory Council to the Charities Aid Foundation and a trustee of FunderFinder and Liverpool Council for Social Service.

He is a member of Townfield Church, helps coach the Port Sunlight Under 13s cricket team and is convinced that the glory days for Liverpool FC are just around the corner.


Reverend Canon Denise Poole

Denise Poole is currently Chaplain to the Bishop of Bradford. She grew up in Hackney, East London where she discovered God’s love and grace. She now lives and works in inner city Bradford. Denise has a background in adult education and community development. She has particular expertise in engaging and working with other faith communities. Ordained in 1993, she worked as Chaplaincy Coordinator at Bradford Hospitals NHS Trust, developing a Spiritual Care team to include people of different Faiths.

For six years she was vicar of St. Augustine’s Bradford, an inner city church with a majority Muslim presence. Working in partnership with local people, the church established a major Community Project and Children’s Centre. Denise has been instrumental in setting up and supporting a range of church projects in multicultural, multi-faith areas, addressing poverty, community fragmentation and exclusion. She is a consultant to Bradford Churches for Diversity and Dialogue (BCDD) and a member of the Presence and Engagement working group of the Church of England.


Marnie Woodward MBA, BA, FCMA

After gaining degrees from Mt Holyoke College and New York University in the USA, Marnie's early career was in corporate banking and finance with Chase Manhattan Bank and Smith Barney in New York, Frankfurt and London.

She moved from America to the UK in 1976 and qualified as an accountant in 1987. She has been involved in charity finance since the 1980s, spending ten years as Finance Director of the youth welfare charity RPS Rainer and six years with the Musicians Benevolent Fund. She has also worked with the Charities Aid Foundation, Kids Clubs Network, the Royal College of Music, the Shaftsbury Society and most recently as Interim Finance Director of the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

She joined Church Urban Fund's Finance and General Purposes Committee in 2008 and took on the role of chairman in 2011. She also acts as honorary treasurer and independent examiner of several local charitable groups.

She is an enthusiastic (and very amateur) musician, singing with two local church choirs, the Sackville Singers chamber choir in Kent and the village barbershop group. She enjoys piano duets with her son  and is having great fun with the village ukelele group.
